What Is Remote Online Notarization (RON)? How Online Notary Texas Works

Remote online notarization — RON — is getting a document notarized over a live audio-video call instead of sitting across a table from a notary. Texas has allowed it for years, and yes, it's a real notarization with the same legal weight as the in-person kind.

Here's how it actually works. You and the notary meet on an approved online notarization platform — we use OneNotary — not a regular video call, a purpose-built one. You verify your identity up front (a credential scan plus a knowledge-based identity check), then we go through the same ritual as always: the notary checks your ID, confirms you know what you're signing, watches you sign electronically, and applies a digital seal. The whole session gets recorded and stored, which is honestly a stricter paper trail than most in-person signings leave.

What it handles: powers of attorney, deeds, real estate documents, business contracts — the paperwork of a life lived at a distance. What it doesn't handle: every document type. Wills, codicils, and testamentary trusts can't be notarized online in Texas, and a few other things still need ink and a live body. We'll tell you straight up if yours is one of them — and confirm with whoever's receiving your document that they'll accept an online notarization before we book.

Our favorite part? The signer doesn't have to live anywhere near Greenville, Texas. A family member stationed overseas, a parent in a hospital across the state, a seller who already moved — if you can get on camera with a valid ID, a commissioned Texas online notary public can help. The notary is physically in Texas for the session; you can be anywhere. Texas is one of the most RON-friendly states in the country, and Hunt County is a perfectly fine home base for a notary who works over video.

One thing people always ask: is it secure? More than most in-person notarizations, frankly. The identity proofing, the recorded session, the tamper-evident seal — a RON session documents itself better than a pen ever could.

If you'd rather do it the old-fashioned way, we still travel. Mobile notary visits across Greenville, Hunt County, and the wider DFW and Northeast Texas area are our bread and butter. But if you've got Wi-Fi and an ID, you don't have to leave your couch.
